COMMUNITY INFO

According to USA Today, Belfast is one of the “Top Ten culturally cool towns in our country!”

In the midst of summer when tourists abound, searching for prime lobster feasts, beaches to soak up the season’s warm rays, and perfect vacation mementos, you may find that Belfast, along with Maine’s other coastal communities, is quite bustling. Yet if you steer away from the magnetic pull of U.S. Route 1 and explore other paths, you will most likely find a quiet corner of peace and solitude.

Belfast is located in the pine tree state’s Midcoast region and opens up to Maine’s largest bay. The city boasts a historic waterfront dating back to 1765 along Penobscot Bay, and has included trades such as shipbuilding, hunting, fishing, poultry processing, shoemaking/selling and tourism. In Belfast’s downtown community, you’ll find 200-year-old Greek Revival and Victorian-style mansions that will surely surprise and enlighten you.

The Midcoast area offers daily excursions to several of the state’s 2,000 islands, windjammer cruises, sailing, deep-sea fishing, whale watching and puffin/nature cruises. There are also ample opportunities for birdwatching, golfing, and hiking. The bay is ideal for kayaking as well. Other activities include a history lesson at the Penobscot Marine Museum, browsing at a local lighthouse, enjoying a picnic in one of the area’s city and/or state parks, admiring local art in a variety of galleries or experiencing a local play in the old, former railroad depot along the waterfront.

If you need to walk off that scrumptious haddock dish, tasty lobster roll or creamy clam chowder, take a stroll around one of the area’s many shops. The Midcoast region is known for its vast selection of flea markets, antique shops and crafts. Just don’t forget to go back and get a fresh blueberry cobbler or a piece of crisp and tasty apple pie!

So come on up, stay awhile, and clear your mind—and in no time you’ll begin to see that Belfast, like Maine as a whole, truly is "the way life should be."
